Role Summary

In addition to his/her production-related tasks, the assistant narrative director will support the narrative director by ensuring that all instructions are followed and carrying out a preliminary qualitative review of the elements that are produced. The incumbent may also be called upon to play a more significant role in overseeing the direction for a small team and/or a specific project component.

The assistant narrative director will work in close collaboration with the creative director, narrative game designer, game director, lead scriptwriter, artistic director (graphic design and animation), audio director and Project Lead (CPI) to develop game highlights and ensure the tonal coherence of the player experience.


The main and routine tasks of the assistant narrative director are to:
  • Ensure that the game’s creative vision is respected during the production phases, including (but not limited to) the development of main characters and key narrative moments, from initial design to completion;
  • Oversee game direction by suggesting dynamic production systems to magnify the emotions elicited through gameplay;
  • Support the narrative team (level designer, game designer, animation, etc.) to ensure that target elements are effectively integrated;
  • Specifically coach event scriptwriters to ensure the development and integration of production elements;
  • Work in close collaboration with the narrative game designer, creative director, lead scriptwriter and artistic director (graphic design and animation) to oversee narrative production in the game by producing scripted moments and in-game play and ensure their fluidity;
  • Work in close collaboration with the cinematic director to ensure continuity between playable moments and film sequences;
  • Produce film sequences whenever required;
  • Direct the script/scene breakdown, casting, voice recordings, movement creation process and final tweaking of various scenes and sequences whenever required;
  • Ensure that the game values are respected during the production phases, including (but not limited to) the steps to develop the main characters and key narrative moments in collaboration with the lead scriptwriter and narrative game designer, from initial design to completion;
  • Understand the gameplay elements and assess how they could affect the development of the story and be adjusted;
  • Validate the game’s overall directorial coherence:
  • Oversee the quality of the composition, framing, camera, music and special effects for gameplay and non-play sequences to ensure that the creative director’s vision is rendered as faithfully as possible on the screen
  • Communicate instructions on the development of features and assets that are specific to narration (e.g. scripted events and dynamic systems elements such as dynamic camera, AI, dialogues, etc.)
  • Assist the narrative director in directing the script/scene breakdown, casting, voice recordings, movement creation process and final tweaking of various scenes and sequences;
  • Assist the narrative director as the game’s main target game footage (TGF) stakeholder and support the direction;
  • Discuss the advancement of the tasks with the narrative director on a regular basis so that he/she is able to assess the progress of the deliverables;
  • Support the narrative director as one of the main points of contact for film industry talent whenever required;
  • In collaboration with the creative team (narrative and gameplay):
  • Contribute to the blueprint and design processes to ensure that the narrative and film scenes are integrated into the gameplay
  • Contribute to the development and presentation of the main characters
  • Contribute to the overall project vision, especially by focusing on key narrative moments
  • In collaboration with the artistic director:
  • May be required to provide an opinion on the artistic direction for the artistic director and presentation director
  • Help set out guidelines for external resources (CGI firms, subcontractors working to market assets, etc.)
  • In collaboration with the audio director:
  • May be required to provide an opinion on the integration of the sound and music at key game moments
  • With the audio designer, establish audio guidelines for external resources (composers, subcontractors working to market assets, promotional videos, advertising material, etc.)
  • During voice recording sessions, work in collaboration with the voice designer to optimize the actors’ performances
  • Carry out all other related tasks.
Education Background:

College diploma in a creative field.

Bachelor’s degree an asset.

Relevant Experience:

At least three years’ experience on game or multimedia projects.

Narrative direction experience in the game production process.
